Glutathione (GSH) is a naturally occurring tripeptide composed of L-glutamate, L-cysteine and glycine (L-γ-glutamyl-L-cysteinyl-glycine). It is the principal intracellular antioxidant and a central player in redox homeostasis, detoxification and cellular-defence research. The reactive thiol group on its cysteine residue lets glutathione neutralise reactive oxygen species and act as a substrate for glutathione peroxidase and glutathione-S-transferase. Research contexts include oxidative-stress models, mitochondrial function, hepatic detoxification pathways, immune modulation, longevity and cellular-ageing studies, and in-vitro work on melanin synthesis and tyrosinase activity.
