SS-31 (also known as elamipretide, MTP-131 or Bendavia) is a synthetic, cell-permeable mitochondria-targeting tetrapeptide with the sequence D-Arg-Dmt-Lys-Phe-NH2, in which Dmt denotes 2,6-dimethyl-L-tyrosine. Its alternating aromatic-cationic motif lets it associate with the inner mitochondrial membrane independently of membrane potential, where it binds the phospholipid cardiolipin. Cardiolipin is a structural component of the electron-transport chain, and research interest centres on how SS-31 influences cardiolipin peroxidase activity, respiratory-chain organisation, reactive-oxygen-species handling and ATP-linked bioenergetics in experimental models.
